For the first and sixth grade students at Franklin Road, meeting with their Book Buddy is a highlight of their week. After Christmas break, each student was assigned a specific Book Buddy in the opposite grade. The first grade students choose a book for their older Book Buddy to read to them. Book Buddies has provided an enjoyable way for younger and older students to interact.

This activity has formed a connection between the older and younger readers. Over the past few weeks, each pair of Buddies has become quite close. First grade teacher, Mrs. Johnson stated, “For the younger students it is very exciting to see their Buddy outside of class. Last week the sixth graders made their first grade Buddies valentines and gave them candy.” For a younger student it makes them feel special to be noticed by an older student that they look up to. Also, reading with a Buddy provides a fun environment for learning.
